Who Knew Grocery Shopping Could Be So Fun?

October 22nd, 2008 Melanie Posted in Cooking, Velveeta | 5 Comments »

Remember a couple of weeks ago when I told you about how I was picked to be a part of the Velveeta Casserole Challenge?  Part of the challenge was that I had to make a casserole that would feed 8 people for under $20.

So, after much thinking (and wondering what I had gotten myself into), I planned out my recipe.  Since Rich and I both work from home, and clearly don’t get to spend enough time together, we all headed off to the grocery store together.  And I’m sure you ladies know how much fun grocery shopping with your husband and toddler can be.

The highlight of the grocery shopping trip happened when Rich and I had an argument about which Velveeta cheese to get.  Now you know if it’s Velveeta it’s going to be good, right?  Right.  That wasn’t the problem.  The problem is that when Rich goes grocery shopping with me we have to compare the per pound or per ounce prices of every single item we buy.  It drives me absolutely crazy.  Because sometimes I don’t want to buy 20 pounds of beef just because it’s cheaper per pound.  Or 50 rolls of toilet paper just because it is cheaper per sheet.

Anyhoo.  Where was I?  Oh, yes- the Velveeta Cheese.

Since part of the challenge was that I had to spend under $20 that meant I couldn’t buy things in bulk, like Rich prefers.  There was one package of Velveeta Cheese that was 16 oz for $3.99.  That size seemed reasonable for my recipe.  So, I put it in the cart.  Then Rich found a 32 oz package for $4.79.  Clearly a much better deal per pound, but when you’re trying to keep things under a certain price every penny counts.  And what would I ever do with that much cheese?

Well, Rich won and we bought the bigger package of cheese.  In exchange for that- we had to put the ground sausage back and settle on the boxed kind of sausage because it was cheaper.  And what did we do with all of that extra cheese?  It makes fabulous grilled cheese sandwiches, tastes good on broccoli and mashed potatoes, and goes great on pretty much everything you can think of.

Here is my receipt from our fun filled shopping trip, and as you can see I came in at $19.33.  BUT- I didn’t use all of my ingredients.  I could have made almost 2 casseroles with my ingredients, I would have needed a bit more of a few things- but most of the items I only used about half of what I had.

On October 30th I am going to post my recipe- and you’re not going to want to miss it because it was delicious.  And the voting will start over at Velveeta Casserole Challenge so I’m going to be begging and pleading for your votes.  And, I’ll also be bribing you with all sorts of fabulous giveaways that I have lined up.  So, be sure to come back!

Trip to the Pumpkin Farm

October 17th, 2008 Melanie Posted in Hailey, Me, Rich | 12 Comments »

On Columbus Day we had some fabulous weather and decided to spend the day at the pumpkin farm.  Here’s a few pictures from our fun day.

There were tons of scarecrows and Hailey had to hug all of them.

Rich and Hailey jumped on this huge bouncy pillow thing.  Rich hurt his neck while jumping and I don’t think Hailey liked it either.  When we asked her later if she wanted to go on it again she said, “No thanks.”

Hailey loved the corn maze.

Hailey did not love the big slide.

Taking a little break from all of the fun to play in the water.

Hailey looking for a pumpkin.  This pumpkin patch seems a bit empty.  We took a hay ride out to another pumpkin patch that had tons of pumpkins, but I didn’t take any pictures of it.

Oh- and totally unrelated to the pumpkin patch- I just wanted to mention that the Velveeta Casserole Challenge site is now live.  Go check it out- and you’ll see my lovely face while you’re there.

Have a great weekend!!

Fun, Fun, Fun

October 16th, 2008 Melanie Posted in Hailey, Me, Rich | 9 Comments »

Hailey’s description of our activities last weekend was, “Fun, fun, fun!” so it seemed like a good title for my post.  Last weekend there was a fall festival at a park nearby our house.

I think the only reason we bring the stroller most of the time is just to have a place to keep all of our stuff.  When I ask Hailey if she wants to ride in the stroller she says, “No thanks.  My is a big helper.  My push it.”

We went out to eat at a restaurant that had an outdoor area we could eat at and watch the boats going by.  Hailey was so good.  She colored quietly while we waited for our food.  Then she ate her food and watched the boats.  The last time Hailey was this good while we went out to eat was… well… never.

The carousel was having free rides, so we went on several times.  Rich’s plan was for each of us to take Hailey on 10 times- getting a total of 20 free rides, and “saving” him $20.  I think we each took her twice.

The next day there were several more activities going on, so we went back.

Hailey checking out the pumpkins.

Then she got to paint her pumpkin.  I ended up with a big green stripe of paint down the side of my face and in my hair, but it was fun anyways.

Posing with the pumpkins.

The carousel rides were still free and since we are a fan of free- we rode several more times.

Hailey and I walking and talking.

Looking at the lake.

We went on a hay ride while we were there too.  Afterwards Hailey wanted to see the horses.

Taking a break to enjoy some music.

Hailey’s Birthday Pictures

October 13th, 2008 Melanie Posted in Celebrations, Hailey | 17 Comments »

In case you haven’t read my last few posts, Hailey’s 2nd birthday was last week.  We went out of town to celebrate with our families since most of them live in the same town.  We just had a small family party to celebrate her birthday at a nearby park.  Here are some pictures from Hailey’s party.

Blowing out her candle.

Playing on the playground.

Hailey loves going on the slides.

Taking a little break.

Hailey loves the moon and she found that it was already out while we were at the park.  She had to point it out for everyone to see.

Hailey on her actual birthday, blowing out her candle again.

Hailey clapping as we sang Happy Birthday to her.

Once we got home Hailey had to open her presents from us.  Here she is standing next to one of her presents, some alphabet blocks.

Hailey had a wonderful 2nd birthday!  Thank you to everyone who was a part of her celebrations!
