My Worry List Continues to Grow

February 4th, 2008 Melanie Posted in Hailey | 21 Comments »

Last week, there was this one day that was all quiet and peaceful.  Nothing was going on, I had no where to go, nothing I had to get done- you know how unusual those days are.  Anyhoo, right after lunch time I started thinking I was getting a bit bored and that I prefer the days where we have to run here and there.

Apparently there must be a mommy rule that I didn’t know about that says, “Do not ever think such a thought.”  Because just a few minutes later Hailey was crying and holding her hand up to me to show me that it hurt.  I looked it over and noticed that her thumb was bent at the knuckle and seemed to be stuck that way.

After the initial crying though, Hailey seemed to be fine and didn’t act like her thumb was hurting anymore.  But, her thumb was still stuck bent at the knuckle and I may not be a medical professional, but I knew that just wasn’t right.  About ten minutes later we were off to germ land the doctor.

After waiting in the germ infested waiting room just long enough for Hailey to catch the latest germs we saw the doctor.  He immediately diagnosed her with trigger thumb.  He told me that it can be painful and can be quite serious.  He sent us to see a hand specialist right away.

We went to the hand specialist and arrived about 10 minutes early for Hailey’s appointment.  One hour later we were still waiting to be seen.  If you have a toddler or if you have ever had a toddler I’m sure you can imagine how much fun it was to be in a waiting room for an hour.  Add to that- it was nap time.

When Hailey’s name was finally called imagine my surprise when we were taken to another waiting room- the x-ray waiting room.  We waited there for Hailey to have x-rays done to make sure her thumb wasn’t broken.  After the x-rays we were sent back to the x-ray waiting room again.  We waited a few more minutes until we were escorted to yet another waiting room.

We didn’t have to wait there for too long and we were called to go into the little room to see the doctor, who turned out to be a physicians assistant.  After the PA saw Hailey she concluded that her thumb was not broken and that it was indeed trigger thumb.  Then the PA had to go get the doctor to determine the next course of action.  So, again- we waited.

Finally we saw the doctor.  He told me that there are a couple of choices.  We can do therapy or surgery.  The therapy is almost always temporary and surgery usually has to be done anyways.  He told me to work Hailey’s thumb back and forth for the next couple of weeks and then to come see him again.  So, we will be returning to visit him on the 12th.

The hand doctor told me that it probably isn’t painful for Hailey, but she seems to think otherwise.  Her thumb is not always stuck in the bent position and when it clicks to straighten she cries and holds her hand up to me.  So, I know it is bothering her.  The surgery that she will eventually need is a simple surgery that takes less than five minutes.  Because of her age and the fact that it would be impossible to keep her still for any length of time, she will have to be under anesthesia for the surgery.

So, since I didn’t already have enough to worry about, this has been added to my list.

Speaking of my worry list- I still have not heard back from the neurologist about Hailey.  I talked to Hailey’s pediatrician’s office twice about it last week.  They called the neurologist and haven’t heard back from him.  Monday morning, I called the neurologist’s office and left a message and haven’t heard anything back yet.

Hailey also had her appointment on Monday with the pediatric ophthalmologist.  Last week I dropped off a copy of the video of her rolling her eyes so that he could look at it before we came in.  The receptionist told me that Hailey’s doctor was in a different office until Monday morning.  I offered to drop it off at that office so that he could look at it.  She assured me that was not necessary as he would have time to look at it Monday morning before Hailey’s appointment.

Guess what?  He couldn’t look at it.  Apparently the computers they use have so much protection on them (to keep the viruses away) that he couldn’t open the video.  He told us he would take it home to watch it and call us to let us know his thoughts.  I wasn’t upset with him, it wasn’t his fault.  But, I was pretty irritated that receptionist didn’t seem to know that he wouldn’t be able to look at it on their computers.  Given that we have a $30 co-pay (yes, you read that right- $30) I really wanted him to be able to see the video before meeting with us so that we do not have to go back again.

Oh, and that visit we made to Hailey’s pediatrician last week to look at her thumb?  We were there just long enough for Hailey to catch something because on Saturday her nose started running and on Sunday she started coughing.  So, now I am worried that her cough will turn into wheezing like it did the last time she was sick.

Wow- all the worrying that comes with loving someone so much can sure be overwhelming!

Then I was tagged by JennieBoo.

Here’s the rules for the tag she gave me.

(1) Link to the person that tagged you. (2) Post the rules on your blog. (3) Share six non-important things/habits/quirks about yourself. (4) Tag two random people at the end of your post by linking to their blogs. (5) Let each random person know that they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their site.

And so- here’s my six things.

4. I love to read.
5. People who do not know me often think I am snotty and stuck up when they first meet me.  Really I’m just shy and I don’t know what to say around people I don’t know.
6. Once you get to know me I talk a lot- sometimes a bit too much, or so I’m told.

And, now I tag Jennifer and Grams.

Random Recipe Exchange #4

February 1st, 2008 Melanie Posted in Cooking | 18 Comments »

For this weeks Random Recipe Exchange Pam has asked us to share our favorite slow cooker recipe.

The recipe that I’m sharing is Rich’s favorite meal that I make.  I make it almost every Sunday.  I start it in the morning when I get up and then that afternoon after church we always have a nice big Sunday dinner.  It literally takes me less than five minutes to get it started.  I had planned to take pictures of it last Sunday but then we ended up going out of town to visit family, so I didn’t have to cook.

Beef Pot Roast

(1) 2 to 2 1/2 pound boneless beef chuck pot roast
3/4 cup water or tomato juice (I use water)
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons instant beef bouillon granules
Small onion chopped
Seasoning Salt to taste
Garlic Salt to taste
1 teaspoon Parsley

Place pot roast into your slow cooker.
Mix Worcestershire sauce and beef bouillon granules into water, pour over pot roast.
Add chopped onion.
Sprinkle pot roast with seasoning salt and garlic salt to taste.
Sprinkle with Parsley.

Cover and cook on high-heat setting for 5-6 hours or on low-heat setting for 10-12 hours.

Sometimes I also add baby carrots (put in slow cooker first and then put pot roast on top of the carrots).
Then we have mashed potatoes, rolls, and salad. Rich always makes gravy using the juices from the pot roast too.

So, there you have my favorite slow cooker recipe.  Stop by Random Recipes to see what everyone else is cooking up this week.

Be sure to come back here on Monday for our second round of Meme Monday (save up all of your memes and awards to share each Monday- then come here and sign Mr. Linky so we can all check out each others memes.)  We only had four participants last week, so help me spread the word.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Thankful Thursday #10

January 31st, 2008 Melanie Posted in Thankful Thursday | 19 Comments »

I am thankful that we have electricity.  A few of weeks ago our power went out because of high winds.  It wasn’t out all that long- only about eight hours.  But, it reminded me that we take so much for granted.  There were several times that I flipped light switches, expecting a light to come on.  At one point I thought, “Oh, I’ll go do some laundry since the internet isn’t working.”  And then I remembered the washer and dryer wouldn’t be working either.  Anyhoo- it made me realize that I take a lot of that kind of stuff for granted.  We had very high winds again yesterday and even though the lights flickered and the internet didn’t work for most of the morning (gasp!) the power stayed on.  For that I am thankful!

I am thankful for the nice time we had last weekend while we took a little trip “home” and stayed at my parents house.  As always we had a blast.  We were also able to spend some time with some of Rich’s family and had a very nice time with them too.  We love being “home” and if we could we would just pack up and move back “home” tomorrow.  We don’t like it where we live and we hate being away from our families….. ooops this is supposed to be a thankful list.  So, I am thankful for the nice visit we had and I will continue hoping for the day when we can move back ”home.”

I am thankful for the nice distraction it was to be away visiting family.  So many days I just worry about what is going on with Hailey (you can read about my concerns here, here and here) and feeling worried all of the time can get pretty overwhelming.  So, it was very nice to have some distraction from all of the worrying I am usually doing.

I am thankful for all of the kind comments and emails I have been getting regarding Hailey.  It means so much to me to know you all really care about what is going on.  I don’t have any new information yet as the pediatrician still hasn’t heard back from the neurologist.  I will post any new information as soon as I have it.  Thanks again for your comments, emails and prayers!

Stop by and visit Iris to see more Thankful Thursday participants.
